Deadly Mers virus could be transmitted through the air

Fragments of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been found in the air, suggesting it has the potential to be transmitted this way. The air samples were taken from a barn housing camels afflicted with the disease, a team of virologists from Saudi Arabia -- where the virus first surfaced in 2012 -- explain in a paper published in mBio. Camels are thought to be the animal reservoir of the virus, but little is know about how it is transmitted to humans.

TransAsia plane crash lands in Taiwan, dozens reported killed

At least 40 people have been killed, after a TransAsia plane made an emergency landing in Taiwan’s Penghu county, the Xinhua News ‏agency reports. A Taiwanese news agency reports that more than 50 people have been killed in the crash. According to the commercial aircraft news portal AirLiveNet, the aircraft was an ATR-72 belonging to TransAsia airline. It added that the ATR-72 was en-route from Kaohsiung to the Penghu Islands when it made an emergency landing in Taiwan. Seven more people were reportedly injured in the crash, AP cites the Taiwanese news agency as saying.

Russia has declared a "day of mourning" as death toll from an underground train derailment in Moscow rises to 21. "Wednesday will be a day of mourning in Moscow, given the scope of the tragedy," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Tuesday. According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the accident occurred as a train going from the city center halted abruptly between the Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bulvar stations early on Tuesday morning. The incident derailed three train cars. The ministry also believes that the accident was a result of a sudden sharp decline in the voltage, but Moscow's electricity company denies any fall in the rails voltage. The Russian Health Ministry announced that around 129 people were injured, 49 of whom are in critical condition. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Russian authorities. The incident remains one of the most serious accidents to hit Moscow's metro system in recent years.

Extreme Weather - State of North Carolina - Charlotte region

Strong storms barreled through the Charlotte area Tuesday evening, flooding streets and neighborhoods. The torrential rainfall brought about five inches of rain in about two-and-a-half hours in some areas. Matthews was one of the hardest hit areas by the flood damage and one couple was forced to stay with friends after water rushed into their home. Some Matthews residents said all they could do was watch and wait as flood waters swept through streets and homes along Winter Wood Drive and Gum Wood Road where people were walking in knee-deep water. Channel 9 found streets flooded, cars wrecked on the side of the road, and people walking in knee-deep water. There was also flooding along Stallings Road that caused emergency crews to shut down the road temporarily. Chopper 9 flew over a scene where water was over the steps of a home on South Trade St. near McDowell St. in Matthews. Duke Energy indicated 2,400 people were without power Tuesday night.
