03/04/2021 - Scientists have discovered for the first time a space hurricane over the North Pole that offered a first glimpse of a phenomenon that could also occur on other planets in the universe.
Researchers led by the Chinese University of Shandong used satellite data to analyze and identify the space vortex , discovering that it was not a swirling pattern formed of air and water, but of ionized plasma gas . The hurricane lasted about eight hours before dissolving.
"Until now, it was not certain that space plasma hurricanes existed , so proving it with an observation was surprising and incredible," said Professor Mike Lockwood, space scientist at the University of Reading.
