Volcanologists are wondering what might happen next on White Island.
In the past six months, the marine volcano off the Bay of Plenty coast has been more active than it has been in many years.
Duty volcanologist Craig Miller says the ash emissions that began nearly two weeks ago have now stopped.
But he says they know there is magma close to the surface.
"Compared to a year ago, it's more likely to do something than it was then.
"Whether we can say it's more likely now than it was a month ago, that's difficult."
