24-hour snowstorm gives Moscow record for heaviest November snow for 50 years

moscow snow
Moscow has recorded its heaviest November snowfall for half a century with a 24-hour snowstorm that has blanketed the city in more than four inches of cover.

Officials in the Russian capital have called in 12,000 snow-removal vehicles to help combat the effects of the snow on the city's transport system but, in spite of lengthy efforts to minimise disruption, traffic jams have been reported to stretch back several kilometres on Moscow's roads.

Cosmic Rays reveal event in earth'magnetic field

The most recent event of this kind, known as the Laschamp excursion, took place 41 000 years ago. Evidence for the event was uncovered by the researchers in sediment cores collected off the coasts of Portugal and Papua New Guinea. In the samples, they found an excess of beryllium-10, an isotope produced solely by collisions between particles of cosmic origin and atoms of nitrogen and oxygen. The beryllium-10 (10Be) produced in the atmosphere then falls to the Earth's surface where it is incorporated into ice and sediments. In sedimentary beds dating from the age of the Laschamp excursion, the researchers found up to twice as much 10Be as normal, evidence of the intense cosmic ray bombardment that the Earth underwent for several thousand years.
Traditionally, the presence of various iron oxides, especially magnetite, in volcanic lavas, sediments and ancient pottery provides information on the history of the magnetic field by indicating its direction and strength at the time when these materials solidified.

This so-called paleomagnetic approach does not always allow global variations in the magnetic field to be quantified accurately. The researchers combined this method with the measurement of beryllium-10 concentrations in the same sedimentary records. This enabled them to demonstrate that peak concentrations of this isotope are synchronous and have the same dynamics and amplitude in Atlantic and Pacific sediments as in the previously analyzed Greenland ice cores. The method based on beryllium-10, which has been developed over the past 10 years at CEREGE, therefore makes it possible to obtain a continuous reconstruction of variations in the strength of the Earth's global magnetic field. It is also known that over the past 3000 years the magnetic field has lost 30% of its strength. This trend suggests that in the coming centuries, the Earth might undergo an excursion similar to the one that took place 41 000 years ago. Since high energy cosmic rays can cause mutations and cell damage, such an event would have a significant impact on biodiversity, and in particular on humans. This is why the researchers are seeking to find out the precise rates of the magnetic field's reversal and excursion sequences, in order to identify potential regularities in its behavior and thus shed light on the cause of these phenomena, which originate in the Earth's core. - PHYSORG.

The best Quasar blast ever seen!

November 30, 2012 - SPACE - Astronomers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) have discovered a quasar with the most energetic outflow ever seen, at least five times more powerful than any that have been observed to date. Quasars are extremely bright galactic centres powered by supermassive black holes. Many blast huge amounts of material out into their host galaxies, and these outflows play a key role in the evolution of galaxies.
But, until now, observed quasar outflows weren’t as powerful as predicted by theorists. Quasars are the intensely luminous centres of distant galaxies that are powered by huge black holes. This new study has looked at one of these energetic objects — known as SDSS J1106+1939 — in great detail, using the X-shooter instrument on ESO’s VLT at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. Although black holes are noted for pulling material in, most quasars also accelerate some of the material around them and eject it at high speed. “We have discovered the most energetic quasar outflow known to date. The rate that energy is carried away by this huge mass of material ejected at high speed from SDSS J1106+1939 is at least equivalent to two million million times the power output of the Sun. This is about 100 times higher than the total power output of the Milky Way galaxy — it’s a real monster of an outflow,” says team leader Nahum Arav (Virginia Tech, USA). “This is the first time that a quasar outflow has been measured to have the sort of very high energies that are predicted by theory.” Many theoretical simulations suggest that the impact of these outflows on the galaxies around them may resolve several enigmas in modern cosmology, including how the mass of a galaxy is linked to its central black hole mass, and why there are so few large galaxies in the Universe. However, whether or not quasars were capable of producing outflows powerful enough to produce these phenomena has remained unclear until now. The newly discovered outflow lies about a thousand light-years away from the supermassive black hole at the heart of the quasar SDSS J1106+1939. This outflow is at least five times more powerful than the previous record holder. The team’s analysis shows that a mass of approximately 400 times that of the Sun is streaming away from this quasar per year, moving at a speed of 8000 kilometres per second. “We couldn’t have got the high-quality data to make this discovery without the VLT’s X-shooter spectrograph,” says Benoit Borguet (Virginia Tech, USA), lead author of the new paper. “We were able to explore the region around the quasar in great detail for the first time

Australia, a fireball explodes over Queensland

November 29, 2012 - AUSTRALIA - A loud boom followed by a cloud of smoke in the sky had many Central Highlands residents taking a closer look on Monday.

Many residents speculated the theory behind the mysterious object was a meteorite heading for Earth at the speed of sound and disintegrating on entry.

A spokesman from the Bureau of Meteorology said that theory was most likely the correct explanation.

"We had a call from an Emerald resident at about 7pm (Monday night), wanting to know what it was," the spokesman said.

"It could have been a meteorite... or it may have been a bit of space debris."

If it was a meteorite, it could have been about 20,000 feet high, and the sound residents heard would have been a shockwave.

"If they come low enough they can cause a sonic boom as they enter the atmosphere lower down," the spokesman said.

"Not very loud, but distinctive ... if they come into the troposphere - which is the lower atmosphere - when they lose velocity, you might hear a series of booms."

He said once it hit Earth, it would have been about the size of a small pebble and where it hit would be hard to determine.

"Depending on the direction it was coming through, it could have landed 100km (from where it was seen)," the spokesman said. - CQ News

Louisiana sinkhole continue to grow

November 28, 2012 - UNITED STATES - An 8-acre swampland sinkhole between the Grand Bayou and Bayou Corne communities in Assumption Parish burped up vegetation and hydrocarbons from its watery depths Tuesday, parish officials said.  Happening about 11:30 a.m., the “burp” coincided with what is called a long-period earth tremor and caused a few trees along the slurry hole’s southwest corner to fall into the sinkhole, Assumption Parish officials said.

Japan should prepare for magnitude 10 earthquake!

November 22, 2012 - JAPAN - Japan should be prepared for the possibility of a magnitude-10 earthquake, although the chances of a temblor that size are slim, a seismologist said. "The chances of a magnitude-10 occurring are very low," professor Toru Matsuzawa of Tohoku University reported at a Nov. 21 meeting of the Coordinating Committee for Earthquake Prediction, Japan. "But if we think of what could happen,

Texas schools install tracking system, big brother is coming soon!

November 28, 2012 - TEXAS, UNITED STATES - To 15-year-old Andrea Hernandez, the tracking microchip embedded in her student ID card is a “mark of the beast,” sacrilege to her Christian faith — not to mention how it pinpoints her location, even in the school bathroom. But to her budget-reeling San Antonio school district, those chips carry a potential $1.7 million in classroom funds. Starting this fall, the fourth-largest school district in Texas is experimenting with “locator” chips in student ID badges on two of its campuses, allowing administrators to track the whereabouts of 4,200 students with GPS-like precision.

Scientists discover massive planet outside our solar sistem

November 20, 2012 - NASA - Scientists have discovered what could be a massive planet outside our solar system, NASA said Monday. Astronomers used infrared data from the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii to identify Kappa Andromedae b, a "super-Jupiter" object that appears to be nearly 13 times the mass of Jupiter.
The planet orbits a star called Kappa Andromedae. It's not entirely certain whether Kappa Andromedae b is a planet, however, NASA said. If it can generate energy by fusion, it would be considered a "brown dwarf" star. Fusion is the process by which atomic nuclei combine, releasing a huge amount of energy. The sun produces energy by fusing the common form of hydrogen into helium. But a brown dwarf fuses deuterium, a heavier form of hydrogen gas. Brown dwarf stars are dimmer and cooler than other stars, but purely in the temperature sense; they have also been called "failed stars."

Planets do not produce energy through fusion. However, planets do emit heat that is left over from their own formation. If it is a brown dwarf, Kappa Andromedae b would have the lowest possible mass for a brown dwarf. The discovery sets a record for Kappa Andromedae, the host star. It is now the most massive star to host a planet that has been directly imaged, or to have a lightweight brown dwarf companion. The research comes from a five-year effort called the Strategic Explorations of Exoplanets and Disks with Subaru (SEEDS). You can see the star Kappa Andromedae without a telescope; it is in the direction of the nearby constellation Andromeda. But you won't be visiting any time soon, since the star is 170 light years away. Slate blogger Phil Plait emphasizes that this discovery is exciting because although scientists have detected more than 850 planets beyond our solar system, few of them have been directly detected. In other words, it's not often that we can get an image with light coming from them. - CNN.

Rare shower of red rain falls misteriously in Sri Lanka

November 17, 2012 - SRI LANKA - Rare showers of red rain fell for over 15 minutes in Sewanagala, Monaragala and Manampitiya, Polonnaruwa yesterday morning hours of yesterday and day before yesterday. According to Meteorology Department sources red rain fell heavily in these areas and the reason has not been found yet. Red rain in Sewanagala and Manampitiya left red frost on the ground. This is the first time red rain was witnessed in Sri Lanka. The Health Ministry Secretary informed Medical Research Institute (MRI) Director Dr Anil Samaranayake to conduct a study to ascertain the reasons for red rain by taking water samples from Monaragala and Polonnaruwa. Increase in the acidity of the air and sand storms are the usual reasons for red rain. However, there are no sand storms in Sri Lanka. India had red rain last year and Indian scientists discovered a variety of micro organisms as a reason for the rains. Since the micro organisms had no DNA, they guessed it had to be a strange phenomenon. The MRI is carrying out research to find the exact reason for red rain in Sri Lanka. - Daily News. Several days, the Spaceweather website highlighted the rare sighting of red auroras. "I was amazed by the deep scarlet color, which was immediately recognizable to the unaided eye," says Cartier. Similar splashes of candy-cane red were spotted over Norway, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The apparition might be related to rare all-red auroras sometimes seen during intense geomagnetic storms. They occur some 300 to 500 km above Earth's surface and are not yet fully understood. Some researchers believe the red lights are linked to a large influx of low-energy electrons. When such electrons recombine with oxygen ions in the upper atmosphere, red photons are emitted. At present, space weather forecasters cannot predict when this will occur. - Spaceweather. If you want to look at the symbolism behind sightings of red in the ancient skies and how it relates to the electric universe and cosmic catastrophism, have look at my article: SKYFALL: Cosmic Catastrophism - Electric Universe, Lucifer, Venus, Nibiru, Planet X, Comet ISON, ELEnin, Obama, the Priest Class of the Magi, NASA, and Symbolic Language Of Celestial Convergence from The COSMIC Spirit blog. It is obvious that we are not just witnessing "intense geomagnetic storms", but increasing levels of magnetism in the solar system.

New York: gant sinkholes causing problem in Queens

November 23, 2012 - UNITED STATES - First they were flooded by Hurricane Sandy and now they're being swallowed by sinkholes. Some of the sinkholes are 10 feet deep in Queens. Residents are worried about further damage to their homes and whether the ground their standing on could literally cave and crumble. Sinkholes have opened up the earth spreading concern that this is the next potential danger New Yorkers like them are facing three weeks after the storm. "All these backyards almost in the same line, they all got the holes. All the way to the street," said Adolfo Richter, a resident. They say the sinkholes started to appear shortly after the storm. Most of the residents evacuated and returned not only to a lot of water in their homes, but to damage in the yards as well. Sinkhole after sink hole popped up and no one knew why. But Taika Miles knows better than to let her children anywhere near the sinkholes. "I'm concerned for my children. They're not allowed to go back there," Miles said. Officials with the Department of Environmental Protection have checked out the sinkholes. They say they believe it has something to do with a sewer line that runs under the backyards. Good to know, but now what residents like Adolfo Richter are worried about the condition of their homes. - ABC 7.
