Extreme Weather - State of North Carolina - Charlotte region

Strong storms barreled through the Charlotte area Tuesday evening, flooding streets and neighborhoods. The torrential rainfall brought about five inches of rain in about two-and-a-half hours in some areas. Matthews was one of the hardest hit areas by the flood damage and one couple was forced to stay with friends after water rushed into their home. Some Matthews residents said all they could do was watch and wait as flood waters swept through streets and homes along Winter Wood Drive and Gum Wood Road where people were walking in knee-deep water. Channel 9 found streets flooded, cars wrecked on the side of the road, and people walking in knee-deep water. There was also flooding along Stallings Road that caused emergency crews to shut down the road temporarily. Chopper 9 flew over a scene where water was over the steps of a home on South Trade St. near McDowell St. in Matthews. Duke Energy indicated 2,400 people were without power Tuesday night.
